Soliciting donations from individuals and other organizations is increasingly more difficult because of the economic downturn. The nonprofit businesses that will do well are those willing to think outside the box. New ways of reaching donors is key to getting the donations you need, and social media is a great tool at your disposal. The Phoenix Business Journal reports on Google’s take on using social media to spur donations for nonprofit organizations:
“With a declaration of “the laptop is dead,” [Jaime] Casap [Google Business Development Manager] said the importance of a strong and meaningful Internet and social networking presence cannot be underestimated. ‘The future is social. Social is going to be huge and continue to grow,’ Casap said.
Citing the importance of Internet outlets including YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and mobile device applications, he said nonprofits need to realize the power those things can have in raising money, spreading a message and connecting with an audience.
The American Red Cross raised $47 million through text messaging during the Haiti (earthquake) crisis. They get it, Casap said.”
Social media marketing is for both for-profit businesses as well as nonprofit businesses. There are people to reach for donations on social networking websites, perhaps more than anywhere else. The potential to receive donations and the places around the world that you can go from your computer seems endless.
Whether yours is a startup or an established nonprofit organization, it’s important to plan social media marketing strategies to get out the message of your group and its mission. Learn everything you can about social media networking and optimization, and put what you learn into practice.
