Kicking LinkedIn to the Curb is a Mistake

Facebook and Twitter, Twitter and Facebook…that’s all you hear about these days when there’s a discussion about social media. What happened to LinkedIn? You can’t afford to kick it to the curb if you’re a business owner. In a few ways, you’ll get more return for your investment using LinkedIn than Facebook or Twitter, especially if your customers are professional or other businesses. Let’s review the ways that you should be using LinkedIn:

Start with Your Profile

Remember the reason why you want to use LinkedIn in the first place: to generate more business. Your profile should appeal to your target market, and include vital information that will make others want to learn more about you. Don’t start any activity on LinkedIn until you complete your profile.

Build Your Network

LinkedIn is an online social media vehicle for networking, which is what you should be doing offline as well. Networking with other business owners could lead to your next customer, team member, supplier, employer or sales representative. Most people using LinkedIn are there to network, and sometimes that makes social media marketing easier than if you were to try to network on Twitter or Facebook, where you have to be more subtle about it. Join industry groups on LinkedIn to expand your network. The more people you connect to, the more likely it is you’ll generate business.

Use Client Testimonials

Recommendations are a form of client testimonials on LinkedIn, and you should work to get them. Being recommended by others convinces people that you have something of value to offer.  Work on getting those recommendations, and you’ll generate more credibility on LinkedIn.

If you haven’t used LinkedIn to date, give it a second look. It’s not the darling of social media, but it does work.

Couldn’t agree more. Getting rid of, or not considering LinkedIn is a huge mistake. It gets compared to Twitter, Facebook & MySpace and doesn’t seem as ‘glamorous’, when in reality it is a business owners dream. It has a lot of features and benefits for professionals that the other social sites just don’t offer.

You’re not kidding about twitter/facebook being all you here. I’d put off linkedin in the past but it does seem to be prominent now. Might have to give it another look.

You should take your own advice and add a LinkedIn share button on the side of the page next to the Facebook and Twitter buttons :)
