Blogs are great to provide information but blogs are not much of an SEO asset unless they attract links. The best way for the blog to be found is to show up in the Search Results and for users to click the link and reach the blog.

So how do you get the blog to show up? Here are some ways to promote your blog on the search engines:

1. Start with the basic. Content is King. Create content that is well structured, well presented and provides valuable information. Provide content that other sites will want to link to.

2.    Check out the backlinks for competitor sites and blogs.  Find out that who is linking to the competitor sites and are not linking to yours. Ask those sites to link to your site as well.

3.    Make useful comments on the other blogs that don’t have rel=nofollow. Make sure the comments are useful and value to the post being commented upon.

4.    If you get media coverage, make sure you link back to the blog if the section allows it. Not all magazines give a link in the news section.

5.    Get listed on other blogger’s blogrolls.

6.    Write a Guest post to other blogs and ask the moderator to link back to your own blog. Not only do you get an exclusive link but you also get is from a content rich page with very few outgoing links.

7.    Social Bookmarks, news submissions, press releases and Article syndication all add to the number of valuable links linking back to the blog.

8.    Include your blog URL in the profile URLs and the bios on the social media sites. Public profile links on LinkedIn and Youtube are good links. However check this out. Not all sites allow users to add links to their profiles. Share via networking. If you find something valuable share it over the social media.

9.    Writing Reviews or Testimonials for products and services used by you can get you a link back from their press page.

10.  Offer a widget, when posted to others’ web sites, includes a back link to the credits page for the widget on your blog.

11.  Job listings and event listings can have a link back to your blog.

12.  Submit to blog and RSS directories. Make sure your blog and RSS feed are included in niche categories and collections of blogs

Bill gates and his Microsoft brand have held a top spot in technology for a very long time. If you thought Microsoft had no plans for a social media network, new rumors would say you are wrong. The game changing innovation that Microsoft brings to the table is something like a having Micheal Jordan on your team. If the rumors surrounding Microsoft are true, any network that came before it just might be in for a fight.

Bill gates is not the second richest man in the world for no reason. Maybe Microsofts new social media weapon will be what he needs to become the richest man in the world. The secret social media network is supposedly named Tulalip. If you are wondering where it came from, just know that anything Microsoft does is for a good reason. Tulalip is actually the name of an Indian tribe that is located in Washington, which just so happens to be the home base for Microsoft and its group of technology gurus. One can only speculate on the meaning of this name or even if it is the real name. Maybe the leak is just a strategy to get Facebook and Google+ to expose more of what they have to offer.

Really, nobody even knows if Microsoft has a social networking website in the works except for Bill Gates and his team. After word of Tulalip hit the web a message was posted at socl.com saying ”Thanks for stopping by. Socl.com is an internal design project from a team in Microsoft Research which was mistakenly published to the web. We didn’t mean to. With MySpace slowing down and Facebook in a battle with Google+ it seems this wouldn’t be a good time to enter the social media race. We can’t forget about Twitter and their 170 million followers sending 200 million tweets a day.

Facebook unveiled new video chat features to combat Google+ and its video chat but if Microsoft decides to make a move it will have the advantage of being able to see those features and improve them. Rumor has it that Microsoft might possibly use Bing to offer a search engine inside their social networking site. This very useful feature is something neither Facebook or Google+ offer to their users. If and when Microsoft enters the race you can be sure that they are going to provide a quality social media network. If history repeats itself you will see Microsoft setup a network that will put a strong hold on the market just like its operating systems. For some reason I don’t see any company being a problem for Microsoft and its run at the top spot in social media, if they decide to do it at all.

URL structure plays an important role. It’s a foundation which needs to be done correctly. Here are some vital tips to optimize your URL structure.

1) Simplicity and Position: Words closer to the domain have higher value and receive more weight age by Google’s crawlers. Therefore, keywords should ideally be as short and relevant as possible. Simplicity also includes doing away with equal or question-mark symbols. As shorter URLs are accessed more often, ideally place your keyword in the first five spots. Also try and ensure that the keywords are in the filename position rather than the subdirectory level.

2) Avoid keyword stuffing: Instead of trying to cram up every known keyword in your URL, stick to the top 3-4. Overuse of keywords negatively affects search engine results. Moreover, they run the risk of being identified as spam.

3) Be consistent: Try not to constantly keep changing your URL so that your search engine is able locate previously indexed pages. However if you do, then ensure that the old URL is directed to the new URL so that your PageRank gets transferred by the search engines, without affecting your site.

4) Hyphenate to separate: Hyphenating keywords makes them reader-friendly for both man and search engine. It helps understand the structure of your URL as well as the different keywords used there-in.

5) Reduce directory depth: Since there is a tendency by some search engines to attribute most importance to pages closest to the domain and overlook directories with bigger depths, try and limit your content to around the 2nd—3rd sub folder level in the URL. Use hyphens to separate keywords. The effort to keep the URL as short as possible should not however undermine the fact that the directory names and keywords used in it do have a role to play – that of helping identify the content on the page.

6) Avoid creating multiple URLs: In their attempt to maximize online traffic, many people opt for multiple URLs for the same web page. However, since search engines consider each URL as unique, this practice exposes your site to the risk of being viewed as a duplicate. Counter this issue by creating a permanent 301 redirect, which then directs the URL of your home page to the preferred domain.

7) Don’t let the Session I.D. affect your site: Every URL is viewed by the spider as a unique page and the unique session I.D. of a URL gets reported as a duplicate page for which it’s given zero importance by search engines. Additionally, everyone linking to your page will be linking to a different URL, which ultimately will downgrade your page rank.
